What is Workwell?

WorkWell is an ongoing program designed to recognize local employers who make a commitment to address workforce health issues. Employers who actively promote changes to their work environment or culture can apply for the WorkWell healthy workplace designation, if at least one of the following changes was undertaken in 2007:

  • Organizational Support:Leadership or senior management developed new or enhanced ways to show their commitment and support for changes to the work environment or culture that made healthy eating or engaging in physical activity an easier choice for employees.
  • Healthy Eating: The work environment or culture was modified or enhanced so that healthier food choices are available or more accessible to employees.
  • Physical Activity:The work environment or culture was modified or enhanced so that engaging in physical activity during work hours was an option or easier choice for employees.

Many modifications and enhancements can be made with little or no cost.

What are the benefits?

Employees are more likely to be on the job and performing well when they are in good health. They are also more likely to be attracted to and remain with an employer who clearly values them.

Many employers, small and large, have found that addressing workforce health is not only desirable but feasible. Even simple, modest efforts can result in tangible benefits for both the employer and employee.

Research shows that employers who have changed their work environment and culture to demonstrate support of employee health have gained:

  • Employees that are more productive, cope better with change, make better decisions, and deal with stress more effectively.
  • An image of good stewardship, by investing in the workforce while increasing morale and managing health-associated costs connected to doing business.
